To be honest when I joined English 210, I expected it to be a regular English class but a bit advanced since we are in college. I never expected that this class would be a bit intense and extremely analytical. Before I joined this class, I would write just to answer a prompt instead of really taking the time to dig in and take the context into consideration. That was one of my struggles during the beginning. When writing the argumentative paper, I was ready to state that standard English should be banned, and we should primarily accept other dialects. When I was writing my paper and replaying my thesis over and over it did not make sense to me. Other dialects are important to keep culture and history but at the same time standard English is what has been approved in the workplace and our education systems. I wanted to believe in one side without analyzing the impacts if my thesis were to come true. I struggled to realize that one answer is not always completely right, and no answer is completely wrong. I improved on this by placing myself in situations related to my papers. Imagining how I would feel if I were forced to complete
ly follow standard English or if it never existed and having to deal with finding a job in America without it for example. When I analyzed both sides of an argument, I was able to gain a new insight and I was able to gain more knowledge to make a more convincing argument. Another thing I struggled with was run on sentences and punctuation. At times when I get a flow with writing, I tend to write out everything in my mind. I end up ignoring punctuation, transition from one topic to the next, and at times citations. The information I put in my papers was good, but I had to realize when someone else was reading my paper they were not in my mind. They will not automatically know what I was trying to say if I am just blindly typing. But by making connections, taking my time to deliver information, I was able to learn to think of the reader. I learned that I had to pace myself when writing and choose my words carefully so that they could be received in the best way possible.
